Robotic Arm System for Tool Development
Developing new robotic surgical instruments requires extensive evaluation in a representative environment where key stakeholders can assess the tool designs and provide technical and usability inputs. We developed and build a complete “surrogate” robotic arm system for our client to test and evaluate prototypes in a pre-clinical environment. The arm features a custom tool drive mounted to a OTS robot, controlled wirelessly. We are proud that our work helped our client accelerate the creation of next generation robotic surgical instruments.
Project Stages:
Ideation and Concept Development, Prototype Development, Build and Test, Process Development, Focus Group Testing, Verification Testing, Pre-Clinical Trial Support
Key Disciplines:
System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Software Engineering, GUI, Kinematics, Robotic Control

It is our belief that businesses that can, should give back to the communities that have given them so much. At Helbling, we are incredibly lucky to be in a position to support local non-profit organizations that align with our values and have touched us on a personal level. Read more about our initiatives below and follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on our upcoming initiatives and ways for you to get involved.
For us, being a responsible community member is just as important as our success as a company. We care deeply about the communities we operate in and are proud of the fact we can give back. That is why we are excited to partner with the YWCA’s GOLD program. Engineering is our passion, but we fully recognize many young people do not have the opportunity or means to pursue a career in engineering. Additionally, the gender gap in the engineering field is wide and we feel obliged to be a part of the solution. Through our partnership with the YWCA, we are helping young girls realize their dreams of entering the field of engineering and giving them the means to fulfill their potential. We strongly believe in the mission of the YWCA and are proud to be a part of their initiative.
We encourage you to join us in the fight to shrink the gender gap in the field of engineering. Help provide young women the tools they need to succeed by donating below.
The Charles River is as integral a part of Boston’s identity as the Red Sox and potholes. The Charles River brings so much joy to all Bostonians. Whether it be a picnic on the Esplanade, a play at the Memorial Hatch Shell, or viewing Boston’s skyline in all its glory from a boat, the Charles River greatly benefits all Bostonians and improves quality of life. Unfortunately, not all of what the Charles has to offer is accessible to everyone. For this reason, as part of Helbling’s community engagement initiatives, we are ecstatic to partner with Community Boating, Inc. to sponsor their Junior Sailing Program. This amazing program helps low-income families access boating lessons and sailing memberships. Many of Helbling’s own have grown up in Boston taking sailing lessons and participating in Summer programs at CBI, so we are incredibly grateful to now give back to an organization that has touched us so on such a personal level.
We encourage you to join us in supporting Community Boating inc. and all the great work they do in helping Bostonians from all walks of life enjoy Boston's most iconic waterway.
